As a performance artist I have chosen for Auckland Art Week 2019 to create a work in response to Colombian artist Rosemberg Sandoval (b.1959) and his performance ‘Mugre’ (1999) where he evoked a moving relationship to violence and poverty, as well as a sense of unease and hopelessness, all of which are essential to his work. I am similarly committed to exploring my Colombian origins, and my own imploding sense of unease and distress in the wake of a drug-related violence that is in a sense my personal cultural trauma. As a performance artist I have a profound desire to transmute the past and to fuel a new sense of hope and justice.
